Finding the Right Therapist for Your Child

A guide to understanding therapy types and finding qualified professionals in India

"The right therapist does not just work with your child — they work with your whole family."

Understanding the Types of Therapy

Many families feel overwhelmed by the number of therapy options available for autistic children. This guide explains the most commonly recommended therapies, what each one does, and how to find a qualified professional.

🗣️
Speech and Language Therapy (SLT)

Helps children develop verbal and non-verbal communication skills. For non-speaking or minimally verbal children, a speech therapist can introduce Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools such as picture exchange systems (PECS), speech-generating devices, or sign language. Speech therapy also addresses social communication skills.

Occupational Therapy (OT)

Helps children develop daily living skills — dressing, eating, writing, and self-care. OT also addresses sensory processing difficulties, which many autistic children experience. A good OT will create a sensory diet — a personalised plan to help your child manage sensory input throughout the day.

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)

A structured therapy that uses positive reinforcement to teach new skills and reduce behaviours that cause distress. Modern, ethical ABA is child-led and focuses on improving quality of life — not on making autistic children appear neurotypical. Always choose a BCBA-certified therapist and ask about their approach before starting.

Art, Music, and Sensory Therapy

Creative therapies support emotional regulation, communication, and self-expression. Many autistic children who struggle with verbal communication find a powerful outlet through art or music. ASFSN offers free art and sensory therapy sessions every Saturday at our Khatima centre.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

More suitable for older autistic children and adults. CBT helps individuals understand and manage anxiety, depression, and emotional regulation challenges. Look for a therapist who has specific experience working with autistic individuals, as standard CBT approaches often need to be adapted.
