5 things to do in the first month after an autism diagnosis in India

February 28, 2026  ·  6 min read  ·  ASFSN, Khatima

The first month after your child's autism diagnosis can feel overwhelming — a flood of information, emotions, and decisions arriving all at once. Many families in Khatima and across India have sat exactly where you are sitting now. This guide is meant to give you a clear, calm path forward.

"You don't have to figure everything out in one month. You just need to take the first steps."

The 5 Steps

01
Allow yourself to feel what you feel

Grief, confusion, fear, love — all of it is valid. A diagnosis does not change who your child is. It gives you a better map to support them. Give yourself permission to process before you plan. Talk to your spouse, a trusted friend, or a counsellor. Anurag Society's carer wellness sessions are free and confidential.

02
Get a second developmental assessment if needed

A diagnosis from a qualified developmental paediatrician, child psychologist, or neurologist is important. If you are unsure about your diagnosis, seek a second opinion. In Uttarakhand, look for specialists in Haldwani, Bareilly, or Delhi. Anurag Society can help connect you with diagnosticians and guide you on what documents to collect.

03
Start early intervention as soon as possible

Research consistently shows that early intervention — speech therapy, occupational therapy, ABA — has the greatest impact when started before age 5. Do not wait for the "right time." Even one session per week makes a difference. Contact us to find therapists in your area and understand what services your child may be eligible for under the RPWD Act, 2016.

04
Inform your child's school and request an IEP

Under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, your child has the legal right to reasonable accommodations in any mainstream school. Write a formal letter to the school principal, share the diagnosis report, and request an Individualised Education Plan (IEP) meeting. Anurag Society's School Inclusion Toolkit walks you through this step by step — download it free from our resources section.

05
Find your community

You will need other parents who understand. Join Anurag Society's parent support group in Khatima — it meets monthly and is free to attend. Being around families who are a few steps ahead of you on this journey will give you more hope and practical knowledge than any book or website can provide. You are not alone in this.

A Note on Government Schemes

Many families in India are unaware of the financial support available to them. The Unique Disability ID (UDID) card, disability pension under the state government, and NHFDC loans are all available to families of autistic individuals. Visit our resources section to learn more about these schemes and how to apply.

Remember — this is a marathon, not a sprint. Take one step at a time. Anurag Society is here with you at every stage.
